About

Welcome to my website.  I’m a lecturer at the University of Derby, UK and teach in the Electronics and Sound dept. of the School of Technology.  My staff page can be found here.

I’ve created this website so I can make more regular updates about my work in higher education, surround sound research and other general points of interest (to me, anyway!).

Hope the site is of some use!

  1. Hello,
I’ve enjoyed your blog and wondering if you would be able to point me in the direction of resources to figure out how to transcode 4 channel binaural audio to ambisonic b-format (ultimately needs to be in Furse-Malham layout). I appreciate any insight you can provide.

    Jennifer

  2. Hi Jennifer. When you say 4 channel binaural, do you mean something like the Chris Milk quad binaural (i.e. 8 channels), or do you mean four channels (four ears…..)?

    cheers

    Bruce

  3. It should be possible to get something resembling B-format out of it. However, I’ve never used one of these mics, and the ears will make the conversion somewhat challenging (ears are easy to add later, harder to take away 😉 ) and you’ll not be able to get any height information (Z channel)

  4. Hi Bruce. I am trying to find a 2nd or 3rd order decoder for an 8 speaker horizontal array. Do you know of any others that may work? VST or audio unit?

  5. Hi Bruce,
We are looking to integrate ambisonic track streaming from http requested MP4 videos in our multi-platform Unity VR content distribution app.
Do you know if there are available solutions for this?
How long would it take to develop a decoder and play the ambisonic track from a streamed MP4 from scratch?
    Any references could greatly help.

Thank you dearly for your wonderful website!

  6. Hi Guy. Sorry, I missed this comment! Is your question “Are their Ambisonic decoders available for Unity”? Are you wanting to output over headphones or loudspeakers?

  7. Hi Bruce, great set of resources but sadly I can’t download your PC plug ins as the link seems dead…

  8. Hello Bruce,

Could you please give me a light on how to do the conversion of AmbiX (4channel) to TBE?

I’ve managed to export the AmbiX file and everything works correctly for Youtube but now I need a facebook version and I’m not sure how to configure the facebook export track in Reaper. Should I use WIG ambi signal remap with SN3D/ACN and then Ambix to TBE matrix (16-8) in the effects chain? Is the TBE plugin expecting a 16 channel Ambix file? How should I deal with this?

Thank you very much in advance,

    Cheers!

  9. Hi Bruce. Can you give any guidance on decoder setup for an 8 speaker setup in a cube arrangement, with the proper encoder of mono tracks? Thanks.

  10. Hi Bruce,
Great page! I am a cutting engineer for analog recordings. Today I recorded “The barbershop” onto Vinyl and while it was with a good result it wasn’t true B-format. I am using Cubase as DAW. Do you have any suggestion on a plug in? Thanks!

  11. Hello Bruce,

I cut Vinyl records and I am thinking of cutting ambisonic, binaural audio onto Vinyl. I use Cubase as DAW. Which plug in or encoder would you recommend to use before the signal is going into the cutting unit (RIAA)? Thanks for your reply

  12. Hi Bruce! I have a problem with installing WigWare. There’s no a single tutorial on the Internet how to install this plugin on Windows so it works with Reaper, so I thought about asking right here. Putting these files into the plugins folder in both the Reaper and the general folder for the DAWs doesn’t help – it still doesn’t show the plugin in Reaper and any other DAW (tried FL Studio and Cubase as well). I’ve tried everything and I’m out of ideas on what to do.
I got the files from a tutor at the University of Derby – 6 plugins in total, freeverb, polar 3d, XY 3d etc. I mainly need Polar 3D. I have the newest version of Reaper.

  13. Hi Jan. Put the plugins (unzipped, of course) into a folder of your choice or a ‘standard’ VST folder (C:\Programm Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins). Then, in Reaper preferences, go to Plug-ins->VST and make sure your folder is in the list of folders Reaper scans. If it isn’t, add it. Then just hit ‘rescan’ and Reaper will find the plugins.

P.S. if you’re a UoD student, feel free to contact me on MS Teams and I’ll take a look!

  14. Hellow,

hey man, always using your Meter 😉 Thanks for that!!! I wonder if there is the Option in Reaper, that the clipping indicator goes away after stopping audio and plaing again? Thanks so far and however…. it’s awesome 😉

  15. Hi Bruce, I am having difficulty downloading some of the new Wigware files from this site. I don’t know if the problem is at my end or yours but Firefox, Edge and Chrome all fail to download the new (2023) plugins; I just get a little spinner that pops up the file version. Other links, which show as links to zip files, downlaod OK. Can you please check at your end?

  16. Hi Bruce, Thanks for checking. The problem must be at my end. I tried with my Samsung tablet and it worked, but still doesn’t work from the PC. Must be an over-zealous firewall or antivirus setting somewhere on my PC.
Yes, it was the first four on the #wigware page, or at least the three after the Mac VST one.
Thanks for the help. I’ve got them now.

  17. Hi Bruce, I see you mentioned that you have a Blumlein shuffler VST. I’d love to try it if it’s available. I haven’t seen it on your plug-in list. Am I mistaken? Anyways, please let me know if this is feasible for me to try that Blumlein shuffler VST. Thanks!

    Ross
